I love these …and oh, Marcel Marlier

They are actually from Noanoa’s summer lookbook last year.
Wait, Martine has a swimming cap like that!
Who the heck is Martine. Well, she is a character created by Marcel Marlier, a Belgian illustrator. I used to read these “Martine” storybooks in Indonesian when I was little. Marcel Marlier is my drawing hero.

So this girl Martine (or “Tini” in the Indonesian version) is so idyllic it’s unreal.
She is smart, pretty and well-behaved; has parents who are rich, look like models, and throw the best birthday party for her, has all the prettiest mod A-line dresses, nicest hairstyles, and coolest adventures a 6-year old could ever have. She sails, swims, cooks, and goes on vacations to the alps. And at one point she learns to play cello. Like, wtf. STOP MARTINE, STOP.

But sometimes, you know, life turns bad. Martine once got scared of her neighbor who she thought was a witch but turned out to be a nice old lady (really Martine, witch?? REALLY??). And Martine gets sick too. When she did once, her puppy and kitten came around to SMILE at her so she’d get better.

I used to stare at those books for hours.
Just can’t picture an old man imagining and drawing all these pretty little girls hahaha. But Marlier, I heart you <3
